We are pleased to announce a brand new addition to our ever-growing Compass team. Darrel Comeau is our newest Health and Safety Executive (HSE) Field Safety Officer, and we couldn’t be happier to welcome him aboard.
Born and raised in Grande Prairie, Alberta, Darrel has spent the last 15 years working in the gas plant, pipeline and facility construction industry, primarily as a welder but also as a foreman and in inspection and project management.
When asked why he decided to make the journey into the health and safety field, he shared with us an experience that propelled his career change.
On Darrel’s most recent project, a green journeyman welder on his team failed to properly tack weld a piece of wide-flange. While Darrel dimensionally checked the journeyman’s piece, the 500 lb beam fell three feet directly onto his hand, crushing it. As a result of the accident, Darrel had to have his left index finger amputated.
He hopes to take this unfortunate experience -- together with his 15+ years of experience in construction and his ten years with the Search and Rescue -- and use it to bring a unique, practical perspective to the safety field. We would like to send him a big, warm welcome, from all of us here at Compass.
